Fitted with an audible alarm and a three-colour LED indicator, it warns you at once when air quality turns poor: green (good), amber (fair), red (hazardous).
A separate LED also tells you the state of the batteries.

Formaldehyde
 
Formaldehyde is an organic compound in vapour form with a pungent smell. As well as being a product of combustion (tobacco smoke and other combustion sources), it is also released by urea-formaldehyde resins used for insulation (known as UFFI) and by resins used in chipboard and plywood, in wallpaper, carpets, curtains and other textiles treated for crease resistance, and in other furnishing materials. In homes the levels are generally between 0.01 and 0.05 mg/m3 . For this compound too, indoor levels are generally higher than outdoor ones. Indoors the levels are generally between 10 and 50 μg/m3. The highest concentrations are found in prefabricated houses, after building work and in rooms where chipboard furniture, parquet or carpet has recently been laid.

Health effects
Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, with sneezing, coughing, tiredness and skin rash. The formaldehyde concentrations measured in homes, especially after building work or the installation of new furniture or furnishings, can cause irritation of the airways and mucous membranes. In 2004 formaldehyde was listed by IARC among group I compounds (carcinogens), with the recommendation to keep its concentration as low as possible.

 
TVOC
 
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are organic chemicals that turn into a gas at room temperature and are the main source of ground-level air pollution. TVOC stands for Total Volatile Organic Compounds, and indicates the total concentration of several VOC molecules present in the air at the same time.

The most common TVOCs in the air we breathe are: acetone, arsine, benzene, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, hydrogen sulphide, methylene chloride, nitric oxide, styrene, tetrachloroethylene, toluene and xylene, among others.

What levels are acceptable?
  • Below 0.3 mg/m3, low concentration level
  • From 0.3 to 0.5 mg/m3, acceptable concentration level
  • Between 0.5 and 3 mg/m3, concentration level to keep under control
  • Above 3 mg/m3, high concentration level
