Description

Based on capacitive moisture sensing and powered by a CR2032 battery (3 volts), this sensor is used as a watering alarm for plants.
Pushed into the soil, it sounds a note through its built-in buzzer when the soil is dry. The alarm level is easy to set.
The circuit uses capacitive technology, which avoids the electrode corrosion problems typical of traditional resistive detectors. Thanks to a microcontroller and the capacitive moisture sensor, the circuit keeps a constant watch on the moisture in the soil. When the moisture level drops below the threshold that has been set, the microcontroller sounds an audible signal through a piezoelectric buzzer.The sensor can tell whether it is day or night by measuring the amount of ambient light through the LED, so that it does not sound in the dark.

For maximum flexibility, the circuit can be interfaced over the I²C bus, so that moisture and light levels can be read externally from an Arduino board or another compatible device.

How it works
  1. Push the sensor into the soil (up to the white line).
  2. Hold the button down until the buzzer beeps, then release it.
  3. The sensor is now calibrated for that moisture level.
  4. If the moisture in the pot’s soil drops, the buzzer will start to sound.
