Description

The Motor Shield with LM293D is a board for Arduino that drives up to 4 DC motors independently. It handles voltages up to 36V and currents up to 600mA per channel. It carries two L293D drivers and a 74HC595 shift register, cutting the Arduino pins needed for motor direction down to just 3. Suitable for all sorts of projects, from robotics to automation

The Motor Shield with LM293D is an expansion board designed specifically for Arduino, giving advanced and flexible control of DC motors. Able to drive up to 4 motors independently, it is ideal for a wide range of projects that call for movement and precise control.

Thanks to its dependable performance, the Motor Shield with LM293D handles voltages from 4.5 to 36V and currents up to 600mA per channel, which makes it fit for many applications, from robotics to automation, from modelling to prototyping.

The Motor Shield carries two L293D drivers and a 74HC595 shift register, which cut the Arduino pins needed for motor direction down to just 3.

For best results an external supply connected to the terminal block on the board is recommended, although the power can also be taken straight from Arduino.

Note: motors, servos and the Arduino board are sold separately.

Power supply
The PWR jumper on the LM293D Motor Shield selects the power source for the motors connected to the shield:
  • External power supply:
    • With the jumper removed from the two-pin header, the motors are powered through the terminal block for the external supply. This is useful when the motors need more than 5V, for instance motors that require a higher voltage to run properly.
  • Internal power supply (from the Arduino board):
    • With the jumper fitted on the two-pin header, the motors are powered directly from the 5V output of the Arduino board. In this configuration the Motor Shield uses the power supplied by the Arduino board to run the motors. This is handy with motors that can work at 5V, when a separate external supply is not needed.

  • 2 interfaces for 5V servos, connected to a dedicated high-resolution timer
  • 2 external power inputs, for separate logic and motor supplies
  • Drives 4 DC motors, or 2 stepper motors, or 2 servos
  • Up to 4 bidirectional DC motors with individual 8-bit speed selection
  • Up to 2 stepper motors (unipolar or bipolar) with single-coil, double-coil or interleaved stepping.
  • 4 H-Bridges: each bridge supplies 0.6A (1.2A peak) with thermal protection and can run motors from 4.5V to 36V DC
  • Screw terminals for 10 to 22AWG wire
  • Pull-down resistors that keep the motors off at power-up
  • Reset button
