PLA, Polylactic Acid, is a material of biological origin, since it is obtained by polymerising lactic acid. The acid comes from maize starch and sugar cane and is biodegradable under the right climatic and environmental conditions. For 3D printing it has some interesting properties, such as a melting temperature of around 160 degrees, which rises depending on any other components added for colouring and for greater plasticity. PLA is spreading quickly as a printing material, both for its particularly attractive colours and transparencies and for the fewer problems it causes while printing. Parts made in PLA are in any case strong enough to build printer parts.
