Description

DC/DC converter Step-Down that turns an input DC voltage between 5 and 32 volts into an output voltage from 1.2 to 30 volts (adjustable with a trimmer). The maximum available current is about 5 A.

Technical specifications

What the LEDs mean

  • LED1 and LED2 on: the module is working in constant current mode (current set with the current adjustment trimmer)
  • LED2 only on: constant voltage operation, but a current limit has been set, so if that limit is reached the module switches to constant current.
  • LED3 only on: constant voltage operation with the maximum available current. The module has no limit set, so it can deliver the maximum current to the load.
  • All 3 LEDs on: constant current operation, but with the set current equal to zero.

Measurements table:

Vin [V] Iin[A] Pin[W] Vout[V] Iout[A] Pout[W] η [%]
6 0.08 0.48 1.2 0.24 0.3 62
6 1 6 4.9 0.96 4.7 78
30 0.03 0.9 1.2 0.24 0.3 33
30 1.2 36 12 2.4 28.8 80

With a 30 V input the output cannot be raised above 12 V, because with the load used the current becomes too high and the resistors start to overheat.

The difference between the output and the input voltage is at least 1.2 V, because the converter is a Step-Down and the output voltage cannot be higher than the input voltage.

The measurements also show that efficiency is higher when the regulated output voltage is as close as possible to the input voltage.
