Shield for Arduino based on the dual full-bridge driver L298P, capable of driving both DC and stepper motors. The board, compatible with Arduino Duemilanove, Arduino Uno, Arduino Mega, etc., features a screw terminal for connecting two motors and male/female pin strips that allow stacking other boards. Motor power can be supplied externally (7÷46 Vdc) or directly from the Arduino board. Each of the shield’s two output channels can deliver a maximum current of 2 A, allowing it to drive two 2 A DC motors or one bipolar stepper motor drawing 2 A per phase. Dimensions (mm): 68 x 53.

Using the shield

The first thing to do before using the shield is to define, via the DIRB, PWMB, DIRA, and PWMA jumpers, which Arduino pins are dedicated to controlling the direction (DIR) and speed (PWM) of channels B and A, respectively. Figure 1, for example, shows the selection of pin 13 for DIRB, pin 11 for PWMB, pin 7 for DIRA, and pin 6 for PWMA. In addition, you must select the motor power source (external = EXT or internal = INT) via jumper JP1. In our case, the EXT source is the one connected to the PWR terminals, while the internal source is the Arduino board. Figure 2, for example, shows the selection of the EXT source as the motor power supply. The bicolor LEDs (green/red) LD1 and LD2, mounted on the board, indicate the rotation direction of the motors connected to the board by lighting up.
