Jolly is a compact module in a DIP28 package with a pinout compatible with the ATmega328, the same microcontroller fitted on a standard Arduino UNO.
But unlike the ATmega328, Jolly has a built-in WiFi module that lets you add connectivity to all your projects.

The main features of this module are its versatility and ease of use.
Using it is really simple: just plug it into the Uno R3 board included in the kit and you’ll instantly have a complete IoT board with all Wi-Fi functionality, with no circuit modifications and automatic compatibility with all projects already built for an Arduino UNO.

To make development even faster, Jolly can be added to the Arduino IDE (just add the appropriate JSON file).

This kit includes the Jolly module and the main board of a UNO R3 board (the ATmega328 microcontroller has already been removed): the perfect solution for anyone looking for the simplicity of the world’s most famous open-source platform along with connectivity for building IoT applications.

The Jolly module
To make Jolly as small as possible, a new SMD version of the ATmega328 was used, called the ATMega328PB.
This microcontroller preserves full pinout, firmware and hardware architecture compatibility with its predecessor, but in a much smaller footprint. An additional microcontroller was also added to provide Wi-Fi functionality. The obvious choice was an ESP8285, equivalent to the ESP8266 but with 2 MB of built-in flash, an essential feature for keeping the board compact. Finally, since the two microcontrollers don’t run on the same power domain (5V for the ATMega328PB and 3.3V for the ESP8285), a voltage regulation and interfacing circuit was also included between the two chips. This way, the board can be easily fitted into the Uno R3 board with no circuit modification, ensuring automatic compatibility with all existing projects. The board also features a built-in LED and an integrated antenna. The two microcontrollers are linked via two digital interfaces: SPI and UART. In particular, the SPI interface — the same one exposed on the module’s pinout — is used for data exchange, while UART is used exclusively for programming, for both the ATMega328PB and the ESP8285. The latter’s serial interface is only active during programming, so as not to interfere with the ATMega328PB’s normal serial operation. Programming the Wi-Fi chip is possible thanks to a boot button for it and special firmware on the ATMega328PB.
