Explore home automation and the IoT with the Smart Home Micro:bit Kit, a complete educational set for students, hobbyists and technology enthusiasts. Built around the Micro:bit V2 board and fitted with an expansion module with IO ports, this kit lets you experiment with smart automation and environmental monitoring. The sensors included can detect temperature, humidity, gas, rain and movement, while the 16×2 LCD display with I2C interface shows the readings in real time. Power is handled in an unusual way, through the solar panel and the charging module for an 18650 battery (not included), which makes for a sustainable approach to electronics projects. The kit also includes two 9G servos to simulate doors or windows opening and closing, a programmable RGB LED module and a temperature-controlled fan. Lithium battery power mode

This module has a built-in charge and discharge chip and can be connected to an external rechargeable battery through the PH2.0MM connector. In the experiment we use a single lithium cell. It has a Micro USB port and a charging port for solar panels, either of which can supply power to an external lithium battery. The module also carries a boost converter that can raise the battery voltage to 6.6V. The DIP switch on the module acts as the OUTPUT switch for the 6.6V rail. The G pin and the V pin can supply a 6.6V output, while the S pin can read the battery voltage after a 1/2 resistive voltage divider.

The Micro:bit V2 board

Although it is no bigger than a credit card, the Micro:bit main board carries a great many parts, among them a 5×5 LED matrix, 2 programmable buttons, an accelerometer, a compass, a thermometer, a touch-sensitive logo, a MEMS microphone, a Bluetooth Low Energy module, a buzzer and much more. All of this gives it a wide range of capabilities.

What is in the box
Open the box and you find seven balsa wood panels (the classic modelling material) holding all the parts needed to build the Smart Home, already cut and released with light pressure on the pieces themselves; the mechanical side is completed by three plexiglass pieces, screws, nuts, spacers, jumper leads for the wiring and a few small but very useful tools that you cannot do without during assembly.

The electronics consist of:

  • Motor module with fan;
  • Steam/rain sensor module;
  • DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor module;

  • 2 x 9G 180° servo;
  • Solar panel;
  • Panel-mount changeover switch;
  • 2 x blue LED;
  • 1 x 18650 battery holder (18650 Li-Ion 3.7 V rechargeable battery not included in the kit).
